The sun is out and the weather is warming up for spring. It is time to ramp up outside exercise programs.
Some important tips to remember when exercising outside:
1. Stay Hydrated: Since the temperatures are still on the cool side in the spring, people forget that they need to continue to consume fluids while exercising outside. Make sure to keep water or sports drinks on hand as they aren't as readily available as they are when in the gym.
2. Watch Out for Traffic: Many drivers forget to be on the lookout for people in crosswalks because we have been couped up inside all winter. Always look for traffic before crossing intersections and don't assume that drivers will see you and stop.
3. Stranger Danger: If you are exercising outside by yourself, be aware of the people around you and take precautions. Don't run or walk alone when it is dark out. Always let a loved one know where you will be exercising outside and when you plan on returning. Carry a cellphone if possible. Vary your exercise schedule so you aren't following the same predictable course everyday.
4. Protect Your Personal Belongings: Many people leave purses and wallets inside the car thinking that they are safe while they walk around the lake. Do not leave valuables visible in your car for any period of time. If necessary, hide valuable items in a secure place in your car before you arrive at your parking space to avoid any suspicious observers.
5. Don't Forget Your Warm-up and Cool Down: It is easy to skip a proper warm-up and cool down period when outside of the gym. Just remember these are the two most important parts of your workout to help avoid injury, so don't skip them!
Enough time surfing the Internet. Get outside and enjoy your workout.
